Appliance Aficionada

I have a deep appreciation and love for appliances. A big reason for my appliance affection is that my family business is appliances. In 1965, my grandafather opened an appliance store in Buffalo NY. Today, Orville's Home Appliances has  four retail locations and a 60,000 square ft. warehouse. After going away for college and law school, I came to the ultimate conclusion that I belong at home and at Orville's Appliances.

In August I moved bought a house. Obviously, I had been waiting a good half of my life to pick out appliances for my own home. Basically I could have anything I wanted (only subject to the structural limitations of a large galley style kitchen). I chose to outfit my kitchen with all KitchenAid products. I know that most people are familiar with KitchenAid but, for those who may not know, KitchenAid is a Whirlpool brand marketed as a dependable premium brand. (Fun Fact: 1919 was the year that Kitchenaid introduced its first residential stand mixer. The iconic shape and design is one of the few images to be trademarked. And the mixer has become a wedding registry must-have.) In my opinion, KitchenAid is an overall-excellent brand with product depth, durability, and classic design. KitchenAid can be pricey - but you get a lot of bang for the buck.
Kitchen-Aid just developed a cool tool for exploring and learning KitchenAid products. Visit Kitchenatomy for virtual tours of KitchenAid products. This tool was initially designed to give retailers the knowledge and expertise to sell Kitchenaid products. Check it out and become an expert yourself! Stay Tuned! I plan on posting and reviewing my appliances individual....so come back soon!

Starting Somewhere

I've been wanting to write a blog for sometime now but, for some reason, I've been unable to get this endeavor started. Perhaps it's my fear of committing multiple grammatical errors in my publishings throughout cyberspace for all to see and laugh at that keeps me from starting a blog. Or perhaps it's my fear of not having enough to write about. I think the real reason for my blog's nonexistence is my struggle with creating the perfect name for my blog. What's the big deal with the name or title you ask? Just call it something, anything, whatever and be done with it - "My Rantings," "Stuff I Write," or "My Blog." I stressed over the title because, in my eyes, a name says it all. If I don't like a blog's title, I don't read the blog. Personally, I like names or titles that are cute, clever, and sport some sort of alliteration. I want the name to roll of my tongue.  One of my favorite blogs comes up big with both content and its name...All Lacquered Up. This blog is a fantastic resource for those who are fans of pretty pinkies and piggy toes. The name is short, sweet, a clever play on words, and is fun to say. Perfect.

So, I struggled trying to come up with a name for my blog of equal excellence. And I may have failed because, in all honesty, "Becky Knows It All" isn't anything special. Ahh but wait. I promise there is a purpose behind my chosen title. First, at this point, I'm not sure what my blog is going to be all about. Sure I've got some ideas and topics but my blog is not dedicated to any one specific topic like nail polish. Without a designated concrete theme, I hesitate to commit to a more topical title. Second, my blog name has a personal origin and speaks of my personality which will ultimately (hopefully) be reflected in my writing.

A few years back, my family and I sat down and dove into a collection of homemade videos. There was one video in the bunch of my brother and I swimming in our backyard kiddie pool. I'm about 9 years old and my brother is about 3 years old. Apparently, I was all too happy to be filmed and started to ham it up in front of the camera. (Note: My younger toddler brother, in bright blue baby swim trunks and matching arm floaties, was beyond cute and surely the intended star of this home production. I didn't get the memo.) I have no clue where I got the idea but I apparently thought I was the host of a talkshow. As my brother splashed around the pool, oblivious as to what was going on, I looked straight into the camera, smiled, and said (in my best grown up voice) "Hi! Welcome to the BNIA Show - Becky Knows It All." I then begin to launch into a monologue about my expert swimming skills completely unaware that I certainly knew nothing about spelling the English language. The great thing about being 9 years old is you can get away with stuff like that - and it's funny. FYI: The BNIA Show had the shortest series run time in the history of Home Video Television with only one episode.

Reflecting on this segment of my life, I laugh at how applicable throughout my life this scenario has been. I'm an eager learner and have spent many years as an academic student. I have a passion for many topics and when I know something, I'm all too willing to share. I DVR Jeopardy because I don't want to miss an opportunity to increase my random trivial knowledge. Obnoxious? maybe. Dull? never.

The difference between the person I am now and the person I was then at 9 years old, is that, plain and simple, life happens. A personality trait that was once cute and funny can develop into annoying and distasteful. You learn that you don't know it all, you can never know it all, and that there is a certain humbling beauty in not knowing everything. As Know-it-alls grow up, they discover they may know very little about a lot of things. Know it alls should not be discouraged by this fact because I think there is no shame in trying to know it all. Know-it-alls can't help themselves- they crave knowledge! They try to learn something new everyday. They put themselves in fresh and unfamiliar situations in order to experience something they've never experienced. A well-seasoned Know-it-all is often wrong and can admit it. Know-it-alls don't let whether they were right or wrong define them. Because, for the Know-it-all, life is more about the value of what you learn when gaining knowledge versus the knowledge itself.

So, while "Becky Knows It All" may not be the most eloquent of blog titles, it's my blog's title and it's me. While I cannot promise that this blog will be free of grammar errors or that my entries will be of the utmost scientific accuracy, I can promise that my blog will be an experience of both the knowledgeable and the not-so knowledgeable kind.
